Sam Walton, founder of Walmart Corporation, said “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish.”
I've witnessed this principle firsthand and have developed a recipe for leadership sucess.
Vision must always lead to action in order to foster change. I translate vision into realistic workloads that lead to change, then challenge key people to drive these workloads to completion. Leaders are built through translation of vision into strategy, then execution of that strategy.
Establishing trust is critical to strong working relationships. I work to build a strong level of mutual trust with key personnel thus ensuring that any workload presented has a reasonably high chance of success. When I challenge someone with owning a deliverable, I trust that they are capable of delivering on time and to specification.
A key component of leadership is owning success and failure. I not only expect that leaders will deliver solutions to the challenges they are given, but that they will also fully own their own success or failure related to that delivery. Success is a cause for celebration, failure is a trigger for learning and improving.
